The prologue was intriguing and left me wondering "What happened? What caused Blessing's family to change so dramatically? How will fighting other people's demons affect these young children?" I was amazed at Blessing's detailed memories of her childhood, the sacrifices the family made, their staunch religious beliefs, the social stigma and ridicule that made school days humiliating, her mother's love and tolerance which implanted seeds of security, the unfairness and emotional abuse which threatened to devastate Blessing's being, the extended family connections that were few and far between, and the underlying reason that kept Blessing in harm's way for far too long. Leaving seemed such an easy solution but was an "animal" in itself. From start to finish, I could not put this book down. Now, I can't wait to meet this stubborn and courageous young woman.Product details

Well written book..keeps your interest and makes you want to know more
I agree with the reviews that said it was very hard to put this book down. I am impressed by Blessing's ability to differentiate between religion and faith after all that she had to endure. Hers is an amazing survival story.
It's hard to believe that parents could be so wrapped-up in their own religious fervor that they actually keep their children in poverty, deprive them of the simplest entertainments, and subject them to abandonment as minors if they do not bow to the strictest forms of self discipline, but there are some parents out there like that. Blessing Macho has humbled herself to write of her journey through childhood and young adulthood with parents who ran a cult-like home, casting out demons as though they inhabited every outward display of childhood antics or youthful growing pains. This story is compelling for several reasons, but one reason is because things will seem to be going normally for a few paragraphs, in which Blessing is describing normal, every day occurrences in a child's life, and then boom, she runs headlong into another bizarre situation with a parent that suddenly is out of control in wanting to dominate and humiliate, all in the name of Christ. I rode the roller-coaster of emotions with Blessing throughout this well-written memoir.
Great job by Blessing in sharing her experiences, could not have been an easy thing to do. I am sure this book will inspire and assist many others in dealing with the scars of abuse.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was definitely a page turner. I could not wait to see what happened next.
It is hard to understand how a child can grow up in a abusive and strange family ? As an adult , seem as normal and adjusted as the author. It is a lesson to all ! I guess we just not know what might be happening in the house next door ? It upset's me and was hard to read ! It is about a man's supposed love of God , and the crule outcome . Just when you think you understand people ,you read this book !
This is a inspirational read. Coming from a very large family, I can relate. However our parents supported us to be unique in our own way. Blessing and her siblings, unfortunately faced many challenges that were very unpleasant and mind corrupting. You will truly appreciate this book. Thanks Blessing, I look forward to more of your books.
